Towards the end of 2019 and early 2020 I began making series of small works on themes of upheaval and disruption using techniques I planned for much larger works. I used these series as experiments in composition and colour, always viewing them together for a sense of movement . Many of these works have been included in an exhibition of small works at Megan Dickinson Gallery in Whangarei (14 August - 15 September, 2020).
Each day of the pandemic lockdown I continued the process making a small A4 sized work with materials I had to hand, scraps of paper and discarded prints. My intent was to mark the character of each of 49 days. The essence of those works with their restricted palette, scale, and relative patterns formed a larger work where the components can be read as single frames from a short movie about disruption and isolation.
