47° SOUTH RAKIURA: FIVE ARTISTS ON STEWART ISLAND
In November 2015 I joined a small group of artists on a journey to Stewart Island at the invitation of Solander Gallery's project team. As a result of our visit each artist (myself and John Pusateri from Auckland, Jacqui Colley from Wellington, Inge Doesburg and Jenna Packer from Dunedin) prepared limited edition and unique works to be exhibited as 47° South Rakiura: Five artists on Stewart Island. The first exhibition opened at Solander Gallery, Wellington (4 May - 5 June, 2016), with the work also being shown at Oban, Stewart Island/Rakiura between the 14th and 17th of May 2016, before continuing with a tour of regional galleries and museums throughout mainland New Zealand from 2016 to 2017.
Accompanying the exhibition is a 32 page colour catalogue that takes you on a journey from the artist residency project on Stewart Island to the artist studios and finished artwork, featuring an essay by arts writer Mark Amery who says:
“I’m impressed by these artists’ willingness to experiment with printmaking to try and capture the complexity of those things within and beneath. The energy, spirit and stories of Rakiura are held in the play of textures and line. These print ‘postcards’ speak strongly for the enduring vitality of printmaking.” Mark Amery (catalogue essay) April 2016.
